Elna Cooke

Elna Cooke is an artist who works in a variety of media: pen and ink, watercolour, oil, fabric and collage. She is also a fashion designer and seamstress who has created and constructed dance costumes, day wear, wedding dresses, menswear, wearable tech and fine art.

Born and raised in Cleveland Ohio (USA), Elna started sewing at a young age. She attended puppet making classes at the Cleveland Institute of Art. As a teenager she moved to Colorado and took classes in weaving, ceramics and dyeing at the renowned Anderson Ranch in Snowmass, Colorado. She became interested in ceramics, built two kilns and started making pottery.

Later Elna attended Sonoma State University, earning a BA in Art Studio studying ceramics and painting. She travelled abroad to Europe and Indonesia. She then earned a degree in fashion design from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in Los Angeles where she has since resided.

Elna has taught fashion design at FIDM for over a decade and currently also teaches in the Fashion Photo Department at Santa Monica College.

Artist’s Statement

Drawing from the figure trains my eye and refines my technique as an artist, pattern maker and designer. I create art out of things left over and find ideas in the juxtaposition, likenesses and geometry I see around me.

My colour sense exploded when I hiked in Colorado among the aspens, sage and paintbrush. My work is best when I feel the energy flowing from eye to pen to paper.
