1067 – AN ORATORIO TO CELEBRATE 1066
A Groundbreaking Aural and Visual Experience for September 2016
Barefoot Opera is delighted to announce that we will be taking part in ROOT 1066 Festival celebrating the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings, with an ambitious choral project which will be one of the flagship events.
1067: An Oratorio (working title) will see six Hastings choirs team up with poets/spoken word artists and composers from across the South East, to create a musical ‘tapestry’ of new choral commissions inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry.
The show will take place in and around the atrium of Sussex Coast College Hastings, in September 2016, with Radiator Arts leading on the visuals.
More information to follow in the coming months!

1067 – Calling All Poets / Spoken Word Artists!
We are now putting together a shortlist of interested poets, whose poetry will be offered to six composers, who will choose poetic voices and styles with which they can identify, and which suit their musical approaches. We are using the Bayeux Tapestry as our inspiration for the project, but not in a strictly narrative sense. We want to offer poets CARTE BLANCHE to respond to a segment of their choosing, in any way that inspires them.
They may be interested in abstract qualities – rhythm, colour. They may be interested in personal and human details in the tapestry’s story lines, even incidental details – the appearance of Halley’s Comet for example. They may wish to respond to the Latin texts or the larger questions behind the tapestry’s existence – for whose benefit, for whose history?
We are offering modest commission fees. Here is a useful link for viewing the full tapestry: Bayeux Tapestry “tituli” – captions
If you are interested in taking part in this unusual choral experience, we need from you: Ideas, and examples of, or links to previous work (by end of November 2015) Please contact: JENNY MILLER at email@example.com
1067 – New Choir To Be Led By Otti Albietz
A key part of our project will be forming a new choir specifically aimed at the 20-30 age group. Hastings has a large number of talented singers and musicians in this age group, however few currently participate in group singing.
Hastings singer/songwriter and all-round musician Otti Albietz will lead and compose a piece for this choir, in collaboration with a local poet/spoken word artist.
