Afro Jazz Band – Baraka are pleased to announce the release of their debut album: YEBO

Subud Central London member Matthew Lucas co-formed the band in 2013 having met trumpet player and composer James Whittington, a parent at the school where Matthew was teaching music. Both musicians had spent time in South Africa and are also great fans of the legendary South African pianist and composer Abdullah Ibrahim. Matthew and James played their various compositions to each other and it was clear that there was a common thread. Thus was Baraka formed!

Baraka-Mat-on-fender-rhodesMatthew came across the word baraka on reading Alex Haley’s slavery saga Roots and its power and meaning felt appropriate for the band and their music.

The album, available on CD, iTunes and other digital formats, comprises 9 original compositions featuring trumpet, flugelhorn, tenor and soprano sax, piano and Fender Rhodes, electric and double bass and drums.

Baraka will be seeking crowd funding soon in order to fund the recording of a new album, so please watch this space…
